The Department of Biology is a large unified department with strong undergraduate degrees, nationally-ranked graduate programs, world-class research spanning the breadth of biological questions and experimental systems, and a passion for science outreach.
Our premiere outreach program, The Jim Holland Summer Enrichment Program (SEP), is an exciting opportunity for underrepresented high school students to be introduced to various scientific subjects from microbiology to plant biology through series of lectures and hands-on laboratory experiences. Program activities are led by a dynamic and skilled team of Indiana University faculty members and Indiana high school teachers. The Department of Biology is part of The College of Arts

Job Summary
Teachers serve an important function for SEP as they help assist student participants with understanding concepts and protocols as well as serving as a mentor and a positive role model.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Attends all program activities.
  • Coordinates additional educational activities and is available to perform other duties as assigned.
  • Assists IU Professors/Lecturers with lab preparations and cleanup, introductions, and with academic activities as needed.
  • Reviews and evaluates student lab journals, providing constructive feedback to help participants learn to communicate scientifically.
  • Evaluates program success by assisting with student evaluations and completing a program evaluation.
  • Enforces good behavior and responds appropriately to safety and behavior issues and addresses concerns to the program director.
  • Escorts students to/from activities as needed.
  • Interacts with the students and serves as a positive role model.
  • Adheres to program policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.

Qualifications
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in education, natural sciences, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • Background or experience with school environments or educating students in a science field
  • Experience working with science outreach programs and underrepresented students is highly desirable
SKILLS
Required
  • A high level of responsibility
  • Punctuality and accountability
  • Ability to complete tasks in a productive and proactive manner
  • Ability to participate in academic activities to interact with the student participants, address their concerns, and clarify content
  • Ability to supervise groups of students during labs, lectures, and field trips

Working Conditions / Demands
Ability to move around campus and/or the Bloomington community in the summer. Teachers must be accessible during lecture and lab activities since the primary goal is to interact with your subset of students and ensure they comprehend activities and key takeaways. The person in this position must be available to work for the entire program - from staff training to move out day. Applicants must not have anything conflicting for the entirety of the program unless otherwise authorized.

Dates of the Jim Holland Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) are July 14-19. Training for the program will be the day before it begins, July 13, 2023.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
